Searching non patent literature
Non-patent literature (NPL) is an essential source of technical information in patent searching. Scientific articles, conference papers, standards, technical reports, theses, and industry publications often disclose relevant prior art that may not be present in patent databases.
This course introduces the main sources of non-patent literature and explains how to integrate them effectively into patent search strategies. Participants learn how to select appropriate databases, identify relevant terminology, and apply search techniques adapted to bibliographic and full-text systems. The course also addresses the challenges of coverage, indexing practices, and citation linking between patents and scientific publications.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify relevant NPL sources, incorporate them into novelty and state-of-the-art searches, and critically evaluate the relevance and reliability of the retrieved information.
