Searching non patent literature
This course provides a structured introduction to the main patent information databases used in professional patent searching. Participants learn how databases differ in terms of content, geographical coverage, time span, discipline, and document structure — and why these differences directly influence search results.
Special attention is given to the foundations of Inpadoc data, patent family definitions (technical vs. extended families), legal status coverage, and the strengths and limitations of abstracts, full text, and added-value indexing. The module compares key platforms such as Orbit and PatBase, highlighting similarities, structural differences, and practical implications for search strategy.
By understanding how databases are built and organised, participants develop the critical insight needed to select appropriate sources and interpret search results accurately and efficiently.
